The Details

The Oak Ridge Kitchen was all about editing back the heaviness of the home's original finishes to create something layered, warm, and quietly luxurious. We tweaked the original layout—opening up the sightlines, bringing in new appliances, and dialing back the cluttered cabinetry to let the space breathe.

Custom cabinetry in a soft, neutral tone feels collected and timeless, paired with honed black marble countertops that offer everyday durability with a lived-in patina. We swapped out the originally planned slab backsplash for handmade Zellige tile, giving the walls a bespoke texture.

Throughout the space, the choices are thoughtful and practical, but never boring: aged brass hardware, reclaimed wood floors, and a few well-placed imperfections that make the kitchen feel like it’s always been there. This project is a study in restraint, authenticity, and trusting that quiet design details often do the loudest talking.

Material Edits for Everyday Living:

Originally our clients requested white marble countertops, after discussing the pros and cons, we swapped for black marble for easier maintenance and a forgiving patina over time. Zellige tile selected over stone slab for backsplash—the stunning neutral tones and textures create a visually interesting alternative to a costly slab backsplash.

Layout Changes for Flow + Function:

We opened up sightlines by relocating the oven and replacing old cooktop with a statement range. Reimagined cabinet elevations for a more intentional, functional feel.

Design Mood:

Layered, warm, collected, with rich materials that feel quietly luxurious—not flashy. Every element was selected to integrate into the house’s character, while steering away from its original heavy, traditional roots.

Pivot Toward Market Readiness:

As the project shifted toward resale potential, colors and materials were edited to feel approachable, clean, and enduring—while still maintaining the layered warmth and quality the owner originally envisioned.
