In 2016 we were still riding high on dreams. The next 2 years would really wear us down before we eventually land in central Ohio in 2019. This is when things started to slowly turn around for us. In 2016 we lived in eastern Kentucky in a town of 3,000 people. I worked every single day, including weekends and holidays, for a startup based in New York. I was trying keep pace with singles in NYC. It was a really toxic work culture. I made very little money. But I was doing work that excited me. This is also the year I launched the rug shop as a sidehustle. Todd was volunteering with the local fire department made up solely of volunteers. He was going back to school and trying to figure out his next move. We joined a gym and it really saved us in a lot of ways: helped us manage stress + connected us with an amazing community. I can’t believe how much changed in 10 short years.
Cheers to more of this in 2026 🥂🥳. Nearly everything here we completed with our partners @ro3llc #columbusohio #asseenincbus #cbuscreatives #designbuild #homerenovationideas

In 2014 I quit my 9-5 and moved across the country with my husband and our baby. The motivation: our horrible childcare options. We didn’t exactly have a “plan.” We just wanted something different. I was working for an online decorating firm as a “digital nomad” designer, but I was having trouble finding great rugs for my clients online. So I decided to fix it. Somehow I talked my way into the rug industry. With no dollars and no marketing experience, I started consigning photos of rugs, then I consigned physical rugs from my house. Then eventually (after several years) I started buying my own inventory. In 2021 the online market shifted right as my business acumen developed enough for me to realize what I was doing—running a small business—was real scary. I panicked. I got scary depressed. Then I decided to get busy doing something else. In 2021, I went to work for a local designer. That lasted about a year, but through that experience I knew I wanted to help homeowners dream up beautiful + authentic spaces. Fast forward 4 years, it may look like things got really good really fast but you’ve got to play the tape all the way through. There have been a lot of mistakes, frustrations and massive disappointments along the way. Truth be told, I would have gave up fast if we didn’t live in rule eastern Kentucky when I started the rug shop. It was unbelievably challenging to create something out of nothing, with nothing but this ridiculous app and some visual creativity. Life can be real weird if you’re willing to say “what if…” Cheers to all that 2026 brings! 🥳🥂🙌 the good, the lessons + the “what if’s”
It’s been so long since I last shared an actual post, I couldn’t find the button 🤦‍♀️ we will be working on that in 2026–along with a slew of other updates.

This was one of the first projects where we combined renovations + furnishing—giving the whole home a beautiful synergy. Working on something fun with my pals @ro3llc ✨

Contemporary kitchen coming this winter.

How meaningful would it be to see your renovation before swinging a hammer? Or to price out every material and labor cost before demo? We provide our clients

✨Teamwork makes the dream work. ✨ We helped our clients reimagine the heart of their home: we flipped the kitchen and dining room. Functionally, this gave the homeowner’s river views and more daylight in the kitchen. It also placed the kitchen centrally between the living room and the dining room. This project expanded into an adjacent living space and down into their basement bar lounge. It’s an amazing house, killer clients—I can’t wait to share the pro photos with you soon! I wanted a DIY headboard that would cost in the materials roughly what a headboard would cost from a store WHILST also consuming a fair amount of my free time and energy. Voilà 💁‍♀️ This headboard idea started 2 years ago with a computer drawing and purchasing materials. A really great DIY project contains at least a 6 month pause to reflect, contemplate and forget about the project completely. Let’s chat mixing wood tones. Just like mixing metal tones is having a moment, mixing wood tones is in. Layering. Collecting. Authentic vibes. None of this is going anywhere anytime soon. It’s time to get creative. Need help? You know who to call. (And if you still aren’t sure—it’s us 😉).

It only took about a week to make but a mere 2.5 years to execute. 😅🫠 This space checks a lot of boxes for me: DIY headboard, thrifted lamp base spray painted, thrifted pleated lamp shade, vintage one of a kind art and (of course) a real good rug. Rug is a wool, hand knotted carpet from Afghanistan.

I’m eager to dig into developing the structure of this company while connecting with fellow small business folks right here in central Ohio. 🤍 I’ve got big, big, big dreams for what’s next for SHS: a showroom, a growing team and prioritizing sustainable and vintage material selections for our projects. It’s not going to happen overnight, but with all the success SHS has had in a few short years, it’s exciting to think about what’s next. Here’s to making our small businesses BIG! #10ksb With that said, if we haven’t spoken yet this year, we are likely booked out into 2026. So if you want to get on our schedule for winter, now’s the time to reach out. #asseenincbus #centralohiosmallbusiness #midwestbusiness #interiordesigners #interiordesignbusiness #smallbutmighty #smallbusinessowner #smallbusinesslove #smallbizowner #cbussmallbusiness 📷 from @racheljoybarehl 🤍
